The Battle of Longstop Hill
Tunisia, 23rd April 1943
by Stuart Brown - 2012

On 23rd April 1943, the 8th (The Argyllshire) Battalion was attempting to break through to Tunis in North Africa and defeat Rommel’s Afrika Corps. The CO, Lt Col Colin McNabb was killed in the advance on Longstop Hill and Major ‘Jack’ Anderson took over command. He reorgansied the battalion, led the assault, and despite a leg wound, captured Longstop Hill with a force of four Officers and less than 40 Other Ranks. He personally led attacks on at least three enemy machine-gun positions and in every case was the first man in the enemy gun-pits. Earlier in the campaign he had been awarded the DSO; this battle earned him the Victoria Cross. In October he was killed at Termoli, Italy.

On 23rd September 1803 the 74th Highlanders were part of an army of 5,000 who defeated the Mahratta army of 42,000 at Assaye. The 74th Highlanders were exposed unsupported to terrible cannonade and calvary charges.
They sustained heavy losses but maintained their position intact. Out of a force of 500 only 80 were left unwounded: every officer was either wounded or killed except the quartermaster James Grant who took charge in the closing phase.
In recognition of their outstanding action in saving the day, the Honourable East India Company awarded them a third Colour which, uniquely, is still carried to this day by 2 Scots The Royal Highland Fusiliers. 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
