This past year
has been a strange difficult time for everyone with the COVID pandemic
impacting in so many different ways on all of our lives.
At the gallery, we have been working hard behind the scenes to get ready
for opening and are so looking forward to being able to welcome visitors
as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime, we have been trying to maintain our support of the gallery
artists sales through the 'art for sale' section of our website as we
continue to remain open virtually.
In addition as part of our fundraising strategy for the gallery, we are staging an onlineauction of artworks drawn from an array of pieces from our stores including prints ceramics and paintings. This does not form a part of our
commercial operations. Revenues generated from this auction
will be set aside and added to the charitable donations used to
conserve our permanent collections and maintain the historic buildings
operated by the Rye Art Gallery Trust.

Kenneth Townsend (1931-1999) Ansoris oil on canvas 77x101cm inc. frame "Ansoris" was shown in Rye Art Gallery as part of the Kenneth Townsend retrospective "Empirical Windows" from September 26th, 2020. It has been very kindly donated by the Townsend family. The artist Kenneth Townsend was a well-known illustrator, sculptor and designer. He worked for international companies such as Liberty, Hornsey Pottery, Pilkington Glass and Galt Toys. In his later years he was the art director of Pickpocket Books. Born in Winchelsea, East Sussex he went to school in Rye and eventually moved to Hastings studying painting at Hastings College of Art and Central School of Art, London. He continued to paint, draw and sculpt all of his life, inspired by his surroundings and the humorous personalities that lived locally. He was a recognized resident of the old town in Hastings, frequenting the jazz nights in the Anchor on George Street.

Rye Art Gallery has long standing relationship with Keith, it was the first place to show any of his work in 1976. He lives and works on the edge of the desert-like environment of Europe's largest shingle bank, in the shadow of Dungeness power station and within sight of the coast of France. As a painter, Purser deconstructs the sea and shore into harmonies of colour, texture, and form. These works are as much about painting itself as they are about the shifting weather and changing moods of the coast. His style utilises texture, found objects, and colour harmonies with an evocative eye and technique.

Judge Ganesh Acrylic on Canvas Painted in 2010 132cm x 86 cm inc. frame Roland studied painting at Chelsea School of Art where he was taught by amongst others, Henry Moore and Ceri Richards whose work he much admired. Awarded a French Government scholarship and British Council grant, he studied in Paris from 1956-9, where the Cubist and Surrealist movements had a deep influence on him. Over the next 15 years he lived and worked in a Bushey studio teaching printmaking at Camberwell school of Art. In 1982 he moved to a converted chapel in Hastings. Roland was a member of the Rye Society of Artists for over 15 years. He also exhibited at the Brighton College of Art in 1991, Maidstone College of Art, The Royal Academy, The Towner, the Hastings Museum, The Stade Hall and in numerous Open studio events as part of Festivals.
