“The Garethon” Auction for the fight against Motor Neurone Disease.
Read more ...Almost a year ago, after some poor liver test results, I drunkenly agreed to run The London Marathon in order to force a lifestyle change and raise a significant amount of money for a good cause.
As an obese London wine merchant who had not partaken in any form of exercise in over a decade, it has been an uphill challenge. I started back in the summer, unable to run continuously for 1 minute, with 26.2 miles as the end goal on 23rd April 2023 in front of 750,000 spectators. True to form, this was, it seems, not enough of a challenge so I additionally committed to raise £100,000 in the name of the Broad Appeal to support the work of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The Broad Appeal, was co-founded by my friend and professional cricketer, Stuart Broad, following the death of his step-mother, from this horrific illness. I will be donating the profits from this auction, in the Broad Appeal’s name to the MND Association, to help fund research into MND.
So to that end, enclosed is an auction that focusses primarily on food and wine with the occasional sprinkling of sport and travel. I have been totally overwhelmed by the generosity of so many wineries, restaurants and friends that have contributed so many "money can't buy" lots for you to bid on, for such a worthy cause.
In a way, I feel this is my magnum opus... the culmination of nearly two decades in the wine industry in auction form. There are tastings, dinners, winery visits, trips and of course, uber rare bottles - most of which are once in a lifetime experiences.
I am proud to present every single lot enclosed, each one personal to me in some way or another. I ask you to bid generously. I promise... I'll never ask again!
If you wish to contribute rather than bid, you can do so on my Just Giving page here
Thank you for your support,
Gareth Birchley

The Eras of Brora Private Whisky Tasting Experience - Up to 6 people
The past, present and future eras of Brora are explored in this engrossing day long experience.
Up to 6 guests will help craft the Brora spirit as they stand side-by-side Brora’s craftspeople of today as they go about their careful work to lay down casks for maturation. Journeying through tastings of new spirit and samples distilled almost half a century before, the visit culminates with a private tasting of fleeting moments of Brora’s storied past in the Brora Triptych.
These three distinct styles from Brora’s storied heritage are brought to life within the walls of those buildings, suspended in time, that have protected its spirit. The Brora Triptych tasting is an ode to the past and a promise of Brora’s commitment to continue this legacy for generations to come.
This experience includes: a 3-course lunch of contemporary Scottish cuisine using local ingredients; tastings of the £30,000 Brora Triptych collection (over 3 separate drams), and one separate Distillery Exclusive, in addition to a guided new make spirit nosing.
To be taken before end April 2024.

Dhruv Baker at Barton Hill Farm - 10th June 2023 - Price for 1 ticket
Since winning Masterchef in 2010, Dhruv Baker has established himself as one of the true legends of the British food scene. Not only has he founded the best Charcuterie company in the UK but sits on the judging panel for the Great Taste Awards, The World Cheese Awards and is an ambassador for many other food high end brands.
Whizz Middleton is a second generation farmer at the 500 acre Barton Hill Farm in Bedfordshire. Over the last few years she has concentrated her efforts into cultivating oilseed rape, from which her award winning Mrs. Middleton’s Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oils were born.
Dhruv spent many of his formative years within a stone’s throw of Barton Hill Farm so we are taking him back to his roots… for one day only! Those lucky enough to have received an allocation of Dhruv’s “under the counter” 70 day aged ex dairy cow will need no persuasion into having the man himself cook it for them, along with the finest produce the local area has to offer. "What could be better than that??" I hear you cry... well, in the spirit of the occasion I will not be sitting down stuffing my face but burning up over the coals acting as Dhruv's right hand man for the day. What could be better than the chance to see me REALLY put to work...
We are delighted that Dhruv and Whizz have agreed to host a lunch for the ages on the farm, under the summer sun. We envisage the day evolving as follows from 12.30…
Three course lunch in the farm courtyard cooked by Dhruv Baker. Those who wish to work off the excesses of lunch can do so by way of a friendly game of Garden Cricket, while those who wish to have a more serene late afternoon will be plied with limitless Rosé, kindly donated by our friends at QV Wine.
Assuming everyone has survived the afternoon, we will head to the top of the hill where sundowners will be served, perched on hay bales overlooking the Barton Hills nature reserve with view across the whole of Bedfordshire. When the sun sets the music starts back on the farm until Whizz turns into a pumpkin at midnight.
Points of note:
Accommodation possible nearby
5 miles to Luton Station
Camping on the farm possible
Taxis by arrangement
Copious booze served throughout (responsibly obvs!)… Champagne, Rosé, Red and Beer
Vegetarians will, obviously, be catered for
Dress code: Farm Casual
Location: Barton Hill Farm - LU2 8NF

Ilaria Verde - Pop up dinner Sunday 25th June - Up to 8 people
Meet Ilaria - a talented chef, WSET Diploma certified, with an unwavering passion for food. Whether she's globetrotting for her day job or enjoying a moment of respite, Ila is constantly thinking about food and her mind is always abuzz with new culinary ideas and inspiration.
Driven by a desire to share her love of food with others, Ilaria decided to start her own supper club, Flat 9, where she can showcase her unique culinary creations and host guests in a warm, welcoming environment. Ila’s supper club offers a unique dining experience that's unlike anything you'll find in a traditional restaurant and it has become a success in just a few months, with seats selling out in minutes.
Ilaria expertly crafts menus boasting unique flavour combinations and techniques. Drawing inspiration from her travels and experiences in gourmet food joints, she skillfully blends international and locally-sourced ingredients to create a dining experience that is both refined and approaching. From the tantalising appetisers to the mouth-watering main courses and delectable desserts, each dish is meticulously crafted with care and attention to detail, showcasing Ilaria's passion.
But it's not just about the food. Ilaria is a gracious and dedicated host who takes pride in making their guests feel comfortable and welcome. Whether you're a regular or a first-time visitor, you'll feel like part of the family as you enjoy the delicious food and wine, great company, and lively conversation.
This June, Ilaria has kindly agreed to host a pop up dinner at her flat near St Paul's, for 8 people, for our charity effort in support of Motor Neurone Disease.
When she asked for a brief I simply said “POV: Naples… but make it @wonderfoodie”
The menu will reflect her Neapolitan heritage but with more than a nod to her influential Instagram account @wonderfoodie.
Canapés will be served from 7pm followed by three courses and matching wines.
This is one not to miss!

Brat at Home - Tomos Parry
It is hard to remember a time before Brat. The legendary London restaurant, famous for its Turbot cooked on open fire, has won almost every award going in the five short years it has been open. Their lockdown project at Climpsons Arch in Hackney is every bit as good as the original Shoreditch dining room.
This week, rockstar chef and owner Tomos Parry has not only announced the opening of his new restaurant “Mountain” in Soho this summer… BUT that he will cook EXCLUSIVELY for the winner of this lot, at their own home.
Whether it be a last of the summer outdoor BBQ, or a winter lunch for up to six people, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for one of the greatest chefs in the land, to cook at your home.
(London only. September 2023 onwards. Suggested pairing... Lot 25)

Dinner at Home - Avi Shashidhara - Up to 6 people
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks (or just not paid your TV license), you’ll have seen Avi Shashidhara taking the world by storm on BBC2’s Great British Menu.
I first met Avi at a pop up he was hosting five or so years ago, shortly after he had left London’s legendary establishment, The River Cafe. I was completely blown away by the intricacy of spicing and delicacy of the dishes that he produced, from his native India, after having spent so many years cooking Italian food.
Now Avi finally has his own restaurant, Pahli Hill in Marylebone which is nothing short of spectacular.
The winner of this lot can invite up to 5 friends to the comfort of their own home to be cooked for by London’s en vogue Indian chef and rockstar of The Great British Menu
(Date to be arranged well in advance. London only unless otherwise arranged. Suggested pairing... Lot 25)

1 x BFV Cabernet Sauvignon Jeroboam (3 Litre) 2018
1 x Bettina Jeroboam (3 Litre) 2018 - First ever released
Bryant Estate was originally founded by Donald L. Bryant, Jr. After purchasing land on Pritchard Hill in 1986, Donald acquired a 13-acre adjacent vineyard which he named Bryant Family Vineyard, and replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon. With its first vintage in 1992, Bryant Family Vineyard ushered in the “cult wine” phenomenon that placed Napa Cabernet on equal footing with First Growth Bordeaux. These wines were hailed by critic Robert Parker as “mythical” and are highly allocated.
This lot includes two very special Jeroboams (Double Magnums) from the stellar 2018 vintage … the near perfect Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the first ever release in this unique format of the BETTINA, a Proprietary Blend of Bordeaux varietals sourced from Madrona, Thorevilos and Howell Mountain, and named after Donald’s wife and current Proprietor and President of the estate.
(Certain “obscure” delivery restrictions outside the UK apply to large formats. Please ask.)

Netball Coaching - England Legend Pamela Cookey - Half day
I first heard the name Pamela Cookey from friends at Millfield after she had been selected for England in the 2002 Commonwealth Games at just 17 years of age.
Purely by chance, the following year we both enrolled at The University of Bath and she was a housemate of my then girlfriend. To be honest I was in awe of Netball for the first time, a million miles away from the sport I’d witnessed at school.
Pamela went on to become an all England legend gaining 114 caps for our country, many of them as captain. After retiring in 2015 she still presents Netball on Sky.
The winner of this lot will have half a day coaching with Pamela at a school, club or anywhere that has a ball and a goal. A truly unique experience, especially for a budding star of the future.

The Complete Erni Loosen Experience - 4 people (2 couples)
Erni Loosen is *almost* single handedly responsible for dragging German Riesling out of the doldrums of the 70s and 80s and bringing it to an adoring global audience.
I have been staying at the estate with "Uncle Erni" since my university days so I thought nothing better to auction than a replica of my own personal favourite Loosen experience.
During your stay you will have a tour of the estate and a masterclass tasting of the Dr Loosen range. There will be a dinner, most likely cooked by Erni himself, with wines from his eclectic cellar - usually mature Burgundy! No need to worry about driving to your hotel as two rooms at the Loosen guesthouse next door are included in the package.
No trip to the Mosel would be complete without a hike through the vineyards with the great man and his dog, Nyx... enough to banish any over indulgence.
If that weren't enough, you will have a case of wine to take away including a bottle of the LEGENDARY Erdener Prälat GGR:
One wooden box with assorted wines:
1 x Graacher Domprobst Riesling GG dry
1 x Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG Alte Reben dry
1 x Graacher Himmelreich Riesling GG Alte Reben dry
1 x Wehlender Sonnenuhr Riesling GG Alte Reben dry
1 x Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben dry
1 x Erdener Prälat Riesling GG RÉSERVE Alte Reben dry

Chateau Lynch Bages Experience - 4 people (2 Couples)
Chateau Lynch Bages needs little or no introduction to any lover of great Bordeaux. Despite its classification as a fifth growth in 1855 it is, without doubt, now firmly established as one of the great "Super Seconds" of the left bank. Quintessential Pauillac and the absolute darling of most of the UK wine trade.
This lot includes a visit to the estate, lunch or dinner at the Chateau for up to 4 people with owner Jean-Charles Cazes, followed by overnight at their 5* hotel next door, Cordeillan-Bages (2 rooms)

Chateau Lafite Rothschild Rendez-vous - 4 people
There is arguably no property, in the world of fine wine, more famous or revered over the last two centuries than Lafite Rothschild.
This lot is an opportunity for the winner to take three friends for a VIP visit of the fabled estate and taste the range in Pauillac, an hour north of Bordeaux city.
If that wasn’t enough you will be presented with a magnum of the legendary 2005 Lafite Rothschild to take away.
“The 2005 Lafite-Rothschild is a gorgeous wine, but it is also very young. Readers lucky enough to own it will find a very classic, gracious Lafite-Rothschild that still needs a few years to be at its best. Bright red-toned fruit, crushed rocks, mint and licorice open first, followed by darker aromas and flavors that develop as the wine gains volume with air. Tasted next to its peers, Lafite is so typical of itself and less marked by the year. And that is one of the signs of a truly great terroir. Lafite-Rothschild is not as showy as many other wines in this vintage, but it is so true to its own identity, and that is the highest compliment I can pay it. The 2005 is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, done in 100% new oak, which is not at all noticeable. At the time, the Cabernet percentage was quite high, but that has now become the norm. Tasted two times.”
97 Antonio Galloni, April 2021, Vinous

Dinner at Chateau Palmer - Up to 8 people
In “Vintage Wine”, the tome written by the late, great Michael Broadbent, 1961 Ch. Palmer is mentioned as the best of its vintage. A spectacular wine that demonstrates that, even over sixty years ago, this estate was a first growth in all but name.
Palmer, situated in Margaux, an hour north of Bordeaux, is a little piece of Britain in France. Alongside a handful of other Bordeaux chateaux, we like to lay claim to it being “our wine”.
When I was trying to put this auction together, wondering if anyone would actually donate anything at all, Palmer were the first to step forward. As such, it is an incredibly special lot, for the winner and up to seven friends to dine at this legendary estate. Once in a lifetime…
(Post June 2024 due to refurbishments. Suggested pairing... Lot 8)

Abreu Wines Experience - Up to 8 people
Brad Grimes, of Abreu Wines, is one of the most iconic winemakers in Napa Valley. Vintage after vintage, their four single vineyard Cabernets achieve perfect or near perfect scores from the top critics. These are legendary wines that show wonderfully their comparative terroirs.
What you won’t see from drinking their wines is that Brad is an outstanding cook, one of the nicest people you will meet and has, over the last few years, become a great friend. To that end, this lot is wholly more personal… Brad has kindly offered to cook himself for up to 8 people, with wine, in Napa or in London… you choose!
(London dates would be Feb/March 2024 with advance notice. Suggested pairing... Lot 8)

Chateau Clinet Experience - Up to 4 people
In wine and in life we make many friends, but very few we count as family. Two of those people, that are among my very closest, are Ronan and Monique Laborde, proprietors of the legendary Pomerol estate Chateau Clinet.
To that end, their incredibly generous offering is wholly more personal: a dinner at their private family home in Salleboeuf, 30 mins east of Bordeaux city.
But fear not… there will be no shortage of wine. The winner of this lot and three friends will be served a broad range of vintages of Chateau Clinet culminating in Cigars and Tokaji on the terrace from their Chateau Pajzos estate.
In the immortal words of the marathon man himself, Ronan Laborde… “there is nothing more sincere than this proposal!”

1 x Harlan Estate Double Magnum (3 Litre) 2012
“Will [Harlan] and Francois [Vignaud] took a torch down to the far recesses of the cellar to search for something special, and discovered a 3L bottle of Harlan Estate 2012 that we are able to offer you for your auction.”
“I have never even seen a double magnum of Harlan…”
… Is how the conversation started and ended. The reason? Because they are only ever released for charity and never commercially sold.
I am immeasurably proud to be able to offer the winner of this lot a 3 litre bottle of Harlan Estate 2012. I have no more to say…
"The 2012 Harlan Estate is reminiscent of their 2002. Probably a candidate for perfection with another 4-5 years of bottle age, the wine is inky plum/purple to the rim and offers a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, blackberry and cassis, forest floor, and a floral, lavender-like component followed by deep, opulent, majestic flavors that caress the palate with high but sweet tannin. This is relatively evolved, and supple and voluptuous for a young Harlan estate – hence the comparison with their compelling 2002. This wine can be drunk in several years and is likely another candidate for 30-50 years of cellaring."
99+ points - Robert Parker

Champagne Philipponnat Experience - Up to 6 people
Long before I loved Champagne, I loved Clos des Goisses. It is a singular wine from a unique terroir. In some ways, Philipponnat don’t treat it like Champagne at all. It should be served in Burgundy glasses and preferably decanted when young.
The vineyard itself is uncharacteristically steep for the region and “south-south” facing, making it two or so degrees warmer than the surrounding sites. It is famed for making legendary wines in cool vintages.
The winner of this lot is welcome to take up to five guests for a VIP visit to the estate, see the magical plot and understand what makes it special. This will be followed by lunch with a series of wines in one of their beautiful dining rooms.

The Complete Ipsus Experience - Up to 6 people
In the heart of lockdown one, at the beginning of 2020, I received an email asking if I would be open to a zoom tasting with [and I’m paraphrasing here] “some Italian nutcase that is pedalling Chianti for £300 a bottle”.
“I’ve found my people” I thought. So I met Giovanni Mazzei, virtually at least… his wife is the heiress to my favourite restaurant in London… how could we not be friends. So we were, and we are!
The wine we tasted was Ipsus 2015. I opened it and had a glass every day for five days. It was magical and well worth my time, let alone the £300 peg. As our friendship blossomed I vowed to visit. My first Italian winery and total entrenchment in all things Mazzei.
To that end the winner of this lot will do the very same…
Lunch or dinner at Osteria di Fonterutoli for up to 6 people

Colgin Cellars Magnum Vertical
Colgin Cellars was my first love in Napa, by way of a glorious bottle of their 2005 Cariad at Sunday lunch some years back. Later that year, Paul Roberts MS from the estate was visiting London and I made it my mission that we should be firm friends.
As luck would have it, it is exactly what came to pass and we realised that we were literally “brothers from other mothers”. The following year I visited Napa for the first time and the great man showed me the estate and took me for lunch at his “old shop”: The French Laundry. The rest is history.
To my mind Colgin is one of the greatest Cabernet producers on the planet, spearheaded by their “home field” plot IX Estate Vineyard.
The winner of this lot will receive an incredibly rare magnum vertical of the flagship wine:
1 case of 3 Magnums containing 1 magnum each:
2016, 2017, 2018 Colgin IX Estate

Chateau Haut-Bailly Experience - 2 people
In recent years, under the stewardship of the wonderful Veronique Sanders van Beek, Chateau Haut-Bailly has firmly positioned itself as one of the great estates of Pessac.
The winner of this lot (2 people, one room) will stay two nights at their glorious sister estate Chateau Le Pape (our home from home over the 50th birthday weekend of the late, great Simon Staples) and have a wonderful lunch at Haut-Bailly itself. Personally, to me, this is an incredibly special lot.

Chateau Galoupet Experience - Up to 6 people
A few years ago my wonderful friend Jessica Julmy (ex Krug Champagne) founded Chateau Galoupet in Provence. It was her vision that crafted this estate into a winery that, not only is producing outstanding rosé, but is leading the region in almost all areas of sustainability.
The icon of the estate is the Chateau Galoupet itself originating from their 69 hectares of Cru Classé vines, set amongst wild protected woodlands.
The winner of this lot will be welcomed with up to five friends at this fledgling estate for a VIP visit and tasting. In addition you will be presented with 6 magnums of Chateau Galoupet Rosé to take away.

Weingut Robert Weil Experience - Up to 4 people
Formally the proud record holder for the “most expensive young wine ever sold from a winery”, Weingut Robert Weil is the apex predator in the Rheingau.
In recent years the wines have shown more elegance and finesse than the broad shouldered, muscular wines of yesteryear. That said, it’s only a stylistic preference as qualitatively their uber intense, mineral driven Rieslings are in a class of their own.
The winner of this lot will be welcomed with up to three friends for a VIP visit and tasting followed by a lunch in the estate’s 19th century, slate adorned “Schloss”.

The Complete Gusbourne Experience - Up to 8 people
Visit Gusbourne’s beautiful 60-hectare estate in Kent and you’ll understand why this unique parcel of land produces such outstanding fruit year after vintage year. They have always believed that growing their own Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes is non-negotiable – it’s the key to ensuring the quality they’ve come to expect with every harvest. It’s that consistently high quality that drives their winemaking team to craft every Gusbourne wine with meticulous skill, care and intuition, judging the exact moment to release each vintage – or on occasion deciding that certain years demand something completely unique.
Over the years, alongside their range of sparkling and still vintage wines, Chief Winemaker Charlie Holland has applied everything he's come to know about Gusbourne, from ground to grape to glass, into creating a range of extremely limited-edition wines. Rare bottles in small volumes that epitomise their understanding of their terroir, the expression of their exceptional fruit and the guiding spirit of their founder.
A Tasting Experience Like No Other…
The winner of this lot will be invited to the estate in Kent for an opportunity to taste wines from this extra-special portfolio – an immersive tasting and dining event hosted by one of their knowledgeable Gusbourne Ambassadors who will lead guests through a tutored masterclass, inviting you to explore the story of each wine from soil to sun, vine to grape, tank to barrel to bottle.
Why did certain years yield the opportunity to innovate? What moment led to a particular wine in a particular tank or barrel compelling Charlie and his team to try something different? The circumstances, the science, the skill, the risks, the spirit of experimentation that came together to tell the story of the ultimate expression of time and place. A story that comes to life as you experience these wines in their beautiful private tasting rooms overlooking the vineyards where it all started.
Beyond their own fields, the Kentish produce that grows around us is also part of that story. To complement a specially created lunch menu, their Ambassador will select one of the limited-edition wines to pair with each of four courses prepared on site by Head Chef Anthony Coppard. Seasonal dishes made from the finest local ingredients – a natural match for a holistic tasting and dining event.
They are immensely proud of – and excited to share – these wines, which epitomise the passion, skill and unswerving commitment to quality and innovation that the team has been practising at Gusbourne since day one. They will be pouring their most rare, limited-edition bottles, including older vintages, still wines and their very special new prestige cuvée.
A truly unmissable experience for wine lovers.

One of UK’s best sommeliers for the day - Jan Konetzki
I first met Jan over a decade ago when he was the, ever immaculately dressed, head sommelier at three Michelin starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay on Royal Hospital. Since leaving, Jan now wears many hats centred around Four Season’s Ten Trinity Square, La Dame de Pic and as the UK ambassador for the Château Latour and Artemis Domaines.
Ever wanted a sommelier for day? Have Jan who is, by the way, four time best sommelier in the UK as well as all of the above. His clients are Michelin stared chefs, five star hotels and some of the most famous people on the planet.
He can help with wine selections, or a tasting on a Private jet, Yacht, do a cellar review or simple serve your wine at your home over a dinner for two. Or perhaps, a one-one tasting, with the expert, on wine faults, or perhaps to assimilate your palate with the best the UK has to offer. The world is your oyster.
Whatever you have ever wanted a sommelier to help you with, this is your opportunity…
(T&C… Vaild for 12 months. Travel outside London and overnight accommodation may need to be covered separately. Suggested pairing... Lot 59)

It’s well reputed (and documented by our annual Grouse Club lunch with Neal Martin) that Andrew Brudenell-Bruce, after nearly half a century in the wine trade, keeps one of the finest cellars in the land.
You won’t find much here from the New World, but classics he has in spades. He has, very generously, offered a dinner with six or seven serious bottles compared by the great man himself at Medlar in Chelsea, the wine trade's favourite restaurant, founded by industry legend David O'Connor.
The wines proffered will depend on the total price achieved but the starting price includes:
Dinner for 6 at Medlar
50+ year old Petrus
Pichon Lalande 1982
Half a dozen other wines

When Neal Martin eventually reaches the pearly gates, irrespective of his multitude of sins, he will have the trump card up his sleeve that it was *he* that brought Chris Alheit to the attention of the world, through his review of the legendary Cartology 2011.
Since then Chris has become the most unlikely rockstar of the wine world. Quietly getting on with his work in the vineyards and the cellar, championing old vine Chenin and Semillon in South Africa, while we all scrabble for every bottle we can get our hands on.
This, very special lot, is your opportunity to visit the, very much closed, winery for a VIP barrel tasting at Hemelrand for the winner and up to 3 friends with Chris Alheit.

Chateau Grand Mayne Experience - Up to 4 people
I first met Jean-Antoine Nony, owner of Grand Mayne, when I was knee high to a grass hopper, and was in no doubt we were to destined to be friends. I have always loved these elegant St Emilions that age so effortlessly.
The winner of this lot will be invited to this picturesque Chateau, with up to 3 friends, for lunch with the great man himself. If that was not enough to tempt you to Bordeaux, he has generously offered a double magnum of Grand Mayne for you to take away.
(Suggested pairing... Lot 11)

Schloss Johannisberg Experience - 2 people
Schloss Johannisberg is famous for being the birthplace of Riesling, and has been dedicated solely to the variety since 1720. It sits on the Rheingau, dissected by the fiftieth degree of latitude, the northernmost boundary of the conventional winemaking world.
The winner of this lot will experience this property, steeped in history and recent awarded 5th place in "World's Best Vineyards", with an exclusive VIP wine tasting and cellar tour, followed by a three course lunch with wine in their onsite restaurant "Schlossschänke", with the best view in the region, for 2 persons.

Chateau Figeac Experience - Up to 4 people
Just on the St Emilion side of the border with Pomerol, Chateau Figeac has, for as long as I can remember, been one of my favourite Chateaux in the region. They sit on the edge of the plateau that crafts some of the finest wines in the world: Cheval Blanc, Petrus, Lafleur, La Conseillante etc and their presence only boosts the legendary status of the sub region.
In recent years, many would argue that Figeac is in the top handful of properties in the whole of Bordeaux. So why not decide for yourself??
The winner of this lot will be invited with up to 3 friends for a VIP tour of the new chai and tasting at Chateau Figeac.

Chateau Pontet-Canet Experience - Up to 6 people
Since the Tesseron family, under the guidance of Alfred, and latterly his daughter Justine, implemented biodynamic practices at Pontet-Canet, they have elevated themselves to a level that stands qualitatively shoulder to shoulder with the greatest producers in this most lauded commune. I have no doubt that their neighbours at Mouton Rothschild spent many agonising afternoons figuratively looking over the fence to wonder exactly what Alfred and his team were doing to craft such incredible wines.
For the last two decades, Pontet Canet, in the heart of Pauillac just an hour north of Bordeaux, has been one of the most sought after wines every vintage when Primeurs comes along.
The winner of this lot will be invited, with up to 5 friends, for a VIP tour (stables et al) and a tasting at Chateau-Pontet Canet followed by lunch with Alfred or Justine Tesseron. I promise you, this property is absolutely unique.

Roger Jones Experience - Up to 4 people
I’ll never forget my first visit to the Michelin starred Harrow at Little Bedwyn. I couldn’t understand how Roger Jones could create dishes that have such an impact of flavour but retain such elegance and lightness of touch.
Since Roger “retired” and closed the legendary establishment just before covid, eating his food is incredibly rare and either for close friends or charity. The VERY best way to get the FULL Roger Jones experience is a BBQ in the garden of the ex Harrow. A life affirming day I can assure you.
To that end Roger has offered the winner of this lot four spaces at his New Zealand Aged Wine & BBQ Day on Thursday 22nd June.
Details are:
A Celebration of New Zealand Aged Wines hosted by retired Michelin Star Chef on his BBQ Terrace, Little Bedwyn, Marlborough, Wiltshire, SN8 3JP
Noon: New Zealand Sparkling Wine Reception with Canapés
Tasting of Aged Prestige New Zealand Wines
BBQ Masterclass and Dining Experience matched with New Zealand Wines in the company of a handful of wine trade legends.
Finish 6p.m.

Champagne Louis Roederer Experience - Up to 6 people
The history of the, still family owned, Champagne Louis Roederer is infamous since its inception in 1776. Their prestige cuvée, Cristal, is possibly the most famous Champagne of all, with it’s history deep rooted amongst the Tsars of Russia and more recently it’s reputation as the most subtle of single vineyard, single vintage wines and for its ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING quality year on year. I promise you, there is no finer thing in this world than a perfectly mature Cristal.
In recent years they have changed their Brut Premier to the Collection series, one of the great recent revolutions in the whole region. I’d tell you all about it, but I’d prefer you find out for yourself…
The winner of this lot will be invited, along with 5 friends, for a Champagne Louis Roederer lunch with Champagne’s most iconic Chef de Cave, Jean-Baptist’s Lecaillon, at Hotel Particular (Frédéric Rouzaud’s private home) in Reims. Absolutely unique!

Mullineux Experience - Up to 6 people
If I was to stick my neck on the line and say that Andrea and Chris Mullineux make my absolute favourite Syrahs in the new world, I’d probably be disowned by half of my winemaking friends… so I won’t say that… not at all… not ever.
(…but they do)
If you throw in the mix their highly allocated single terroir Chenin Blancs and the whole host of wines are at the very apex of their respective categories, it makes them one of the most exciting estates on the planet.
You’re going to want me to tell you they are awful people, aren’t you?! Well I won’t… they are literally the nicest couple you’d hope to meet.
So what are you waiting for? The winner of this lot will be invited, with up to 5 friends, for a VIP tour, tasting and lunch at Roundstone, their home in the now legendary Swartland, South Africa.

Lunch with Neal Martin at Wild Flor (Hove) - Up to 8 people
I first met Neal Martin and his wife, Tomoko, in “Munchies”, an appalling fast food joint on the Parade at the University of Bath… probably in the back end of 2005. I had invited him to host a tasting for the University wine society that I was running.
Neal had not long started his blog Wine Journal and was really becoming the first of the “kids on the block” bloggers. It wasn’t long before he was snapped up my Robert Parker to work his pen full time at The Wine Advocate and begin his journey to becoming one of the most prolific wine journalists of our age.
In the last eighteen years we have drunk more than a few great wines together but nothing quite solidified a friendship like the formulation of London’s most exclusive game and wine based annual dining circle, Grouse Club (see Lot 50).
Furthermore we share a joint love of a wonderful restaurant in Hove, Wild Flor. Rob Maynard, in his infinite generosity, did not hesitate when I asked if we could auction off a table with Neal for such a good cause. They are legends both.
The winner of this lot will be invited to Wild Flor, in Hove, with Neal and up to 7 friends for a glorious, booze filled Saturday lunch.

Dinner with Linden Wilkie at 67 Pall Mall - Up to 8 people
In a time gone by, before London knew REAL fine wine events, a kiwi pioneer by the name of Linden Wilkie redrew the map. Everything from 1921 Sauternes horizontals to 150 year verticals of Bordeaux Chateaux on a nearly weekly basis… if it was the greatest wine on the planet, he was opening it.
About a decade ago we sadly lost the ultimate hedonist to the Orient… but he has agreed to host his first London dinner in a VERY long time for the winner of this lot and up to 7 friends at our capitals “new” home of wine, the legendary 67 Pall Mall.
This will, without question, be one for the ages!
Date to be mutually agreed.

The Ultimate Richmond Dinner at The Fat Badger with Gareth Birchley and Richard Gladwin - Up to 6 people
There is a small corner of south west London (and I use London in the loosest sense) that will be forever England. It never rains, roses bloom all year round and if you listen carefully you can hear the distant echo of England rugby fans cheering a century of glory days at the fortress down the road. “Is this heaven?” I hear you cry. No, it’s Richmond
When The Fat Badger Restaurant opened last year, I knew I had found my people. So to that end, owner Richard Gladwin has offered the “Ultimate Richmond dinner.” He does the food, I do the booze and we join you and up to 5 friends in celebration of the greatest place on earth.

Dinner with Aggers & Lyons at 67 Pall Mall - Up to 8 people
The stories I could tell of years spent dining with the great Will Lyons are both numerous and inappropriate for a public forum.
Not only is Will the voice of wine through his primary medium, The Sunday Times, but is always immaculately turned out and the very epitome of the old school wine trade.
Jonathan Agnew, to me, is the sound of summer. His voice is, in my life to date, synonymous with every great moment in the history of the game that I hold dear. Aggers made his debut on Test Match Special in 1991, shortly before his career nearly took a spectacular nosedive after the famous “leg over” incident. Thankfully, for all our sakes, he went on to become one of the most notable sports broadcasters in history.
Dinner for the winner of this lot and their 7 friends will revolve around classical wines. You will not discover a “great new Albariño” or why the production of Assyrtiko has increased tenfold in the last decade… but you might learn a thing or two about the greatest moments of cricket and about the most wonderful vintages of Bordeaux.
“There is old world wine, that comes from the left bank… New world wine, that comes from the right bank… and white wine, that comes from Burgundy”
So join Will and Aggers for a very special evening of fine wine, anecdotes, jokes and stories from two of the biggest personalities in cricket and wine.
They say don’t meet your heroes… but you might just find me pouring the wine at this one…
As a starting point, this will include a 6 litre bottle of 2014 Corton Charlemagne from Bouchard.
(Provisionally booked for 25th July)

Cornwall Food Experience - Stay for a week - Up to 4 people
Nestled in the fields next to St Kew village, you will find a lovely cottage from which to explore North Cornwall. Peace, greenery and birdsong surround this detached, two bedroom (one double, one twin) property and the thoughtful simplicity of the cottage's interior is welcoming, cosy and calm. The village of St Kew is a short drive to the popular beaches of Rock, Daymer Bay and Polzeath or the busy market towns of Wadebridge and Padstow and their various shops and restaurants.
The winner of this lot will have exclusive use of this most wonderful cottage for a week of their choosing.
https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/52615169
It wouldn't be right if we didn't include a foodie element, so my wonderful friend and top tier chef Pat Galvin has included an Oyster Shucking Masterclass and Big ole seafood platter at his beachside restaurant, Catch in Mawgan Porth.
Furthermore I will happily ensure there is a "suitable" mixed case of wine to lubricate your trip that "reflects the gravitas of the bid".
(Excl. School Holidays. Subject to availability in advance. More than 6 months ahead easiest by arrangement)

The Complete Chateau D’Esclans Experience
Unless you have been living under a rock for the last two decades, you will be well aware that Sacha Lichine has, through this legendary property, transformed Provence Rosé.
It’s impossible to move in summer without spotting a bottle of their most famous wine, Whispering Angel, quietly bathing in an ice bucket somewhere nearby. But… that is certainly not where the fun stops! There is quality at every level, all the way up to their top cuvée Garrus, the rosé that reframed age-ability and gastronomic quality in the region.
The winner of The Complete Chateau D’Esclans Experience will arrive at the estate around 3pm for a vineyard tour and complete range tasting. Before a glorious dinner under the Mediterranean sun you are welcome to relax, swim in the pool or go for a walk amongst the vines. No need to rush off after dinner as you will have the run of the estate villa for the night - up 4 people (2 rooms)
(Dates by mutual arrangement with the estate. Suggested pairing... Lot 18)

1 x Lodovico 2018 Double Magnum
In 1985 Lodovico Antinori, from the centuries old dynasty, released his maiden vintage of a new estate Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, which would soon become one of the most iconic wines on the planet.
In 2002, Antinori sold his final remaining stake in the now legendary Super Tuscan to concentrate on his new project Tenuta di Biserno, whose flagship wine (predominantly made from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) is named after the great man himself, “Lodovico”.
Now 78 years old, he is aided by his wonderful daughter Sophia, who has persuaded Lodovico to donate a double magnum of their 2018 for my marathon effort. Like it’s “grapesake” Cheval Blanc, this is a wine that really pushes my buttons… loaded with that beautiful perfumed Cabernet Franc.

1 x 6 Litre - Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja 2012
I have, for a long time been a huge fan of the wines of CVNE in Rioja. A few years ago, thanks to a cancelled flight from a weekend in San Sebastian, I was able to visit a couple of their estates and have dinner with THE man himself Victor Urrutia.
Victor has kindly donated a 6 Litre Imperial of Imperial Gran Reserva 2012 to the winner of this lot.
"The wine that represents the traditional and serious reds from Haro, the 2012 Imperial Gran Reserva is a classical blend of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo that matured in barrel for two years. It has a textbook serious Haro nose, with dark spices, ripe fruit, something balsamic and a round, full-bodied palate within the straight and serious style of the wine. 2012 was a warm year, but the wines are fresher than those from 2011. This has fine, slightly grainy tannins with good grip. A textbook Imperial Gran Reserva. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2015."
95 points - Wine Advocate

Heitz Cellar Legacy Experience - Up to 4 people
There are few names in Napa that can claim such a rich history of success in the early days of the region than Heitz. Throughout the 60s and 70s their most famous cuvée, Martha’s Vineyard, became rightly renowned as one of the icons of the wine world. Still today, the Heitz Martha 1974 is recognised as a contender for “Greatest New World Wine” ever made.
The estate, founded by Joe Heitz in 1961, was sold in 2018 to a US billionaire, whose aim was to re-establish Heitz as one of the world's great properties. He drafted in legendary, rockstar Master Sommelier, Carlton McCoy, to run the company which now has seven wineries under its belt.
The winner of this lot will be invited, with up to 3 friends, to the Heitz Salon in Napa for a VIP experience accompanied by all current releases and one legacy selection from their library.
If that weren’t enough there will also be a Jeroboam of Heitz Cellar Linda Falls Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 to take away (can also be shipped).
Linda Falls, situated on Howell Mountain, is a small seven acre vineyard developed in 2002 by David Heitz. The vineyard is located at 1600ft next to the waterfall from which it receives its name. This ensures that the mountain site remains cool, producing wines of great concentration given the incredibly well drained Aiken Volcanic Soils. 2017 is the first vintage that Linda Falls has been bottled in Jeroboam.

Eva Fricke Riesling Krone 2022 Double Magnum - Rare as hens teeth
I have been fortunate, over the last fifteen years, to witness first hand the meteoric rise to success of a few close friends. Front and centre is the legendary Eva Fricke, whose tiny winery in Eltville is rapidly gaining cult status.
When she wanted to start the winery, she came to me to help her raise €15,000 to buy some vineyards… sadly the German tax regulators wouldn't play ball but I mention it because today, that would just buy you three half bottles of her legendary TBA.
She is an absolute rock star of our industry and when all is said and done I have no doubt that her name will be mentioned in the same breath as Henri Jayer and Christophe Roumier… you can hold me to that!
I am incredibly honoured and flattered that she will bottle (in August 2023) for the winner of this lot, a 3 litre bottle of her unbelievable Lorcher Krone Riesling Dry 2022. This wine is yet to be reviewed but in 2021 this was one of the highest scoring wines in James Suckling’s report, being awarded 98 points.
(Deliverable December 2023 onwards)

Whisky Tasting - Dave Broom and Dawn Davies MW - Up to 24 people
For over a quarter of a century Dave Broom has been THE name in whisky writing and education. Dave has written a dozen tomes on this most intricate of subjects, including the legendary World Atlas of Whisky. A Partick Thistle supporter who has somehow carved out a living from drinking, writing and talking about anything and everything that has undergone distillation. In my view the only peer to Dave in this corner of our wonderful industry is Dawn Davies MW, head buyer at The Whisky Exchange, and arguably the largest buyer of fine whisky on the planet. She is as knowledgeable about all beverages as she is a wonderful human.
“What a duo” I hear you cry… well they are BOTH yours for one night only...
The winner of this lot will be invited to The Whisky Exchange, Covent Garden, on Tuesday 13th June, with up to 23 (no less!) of their nearest and dearest for a whisky tasting to remember...

Fifteen or so years ago a kid met a lawyer who introduced him to a builder and an accountant. They all became friends. A hot minute later a hockey player joined the gang and the Village People were reincarnated. Over the years the legendary bottles were countless… simply at the hands of one Goliath of a man… Mr G.
Early last year they attempted the comeback tour at the legendary 2* Michelin starred Raby Hunt near Darlington. It was a success. They’re all a little older but no wiser and the kid had put on a few pounds.
The dishes knocked out by James Close and his team were astonishing. The highlight for me being the A5 Wagyu and the truffle soufflé. On that occasion the wines of the day were La Mission Haut Brion ‘59, Haut Brion Blanc ‘85, Coche Dury Corton Charlemagne 2006 and Jaboulet La Chapelle ‘78.
Why am I telling you that? So you get a flavour of the man, the myth, the legend who puts on lunches where La Tache ‘99 doesn’t hit the highlight reel.
So, to that end, he have offered a lot that will go part way at least to replicating that memorable Friday lunch.
The winner of this lot will be invited to the double Michelin starred Raby Hunt, with up to 3 friends to experience their iconic Kitchen Table, hosted by the Gilberts themselves. If the allure of James’ cooking wasn’t enough, the wines will be chosen and supplied for you by Mr G.
The starting price will include a bottle of Salon to begin and a magnum of Lafite with that unbelievable A5 Wagyu. The higher the bid, the better the wines. The sky is the limit.
Worried about getting home after the best meal of your life? Fear not, two rooms at the Raby Hunt are included in this, quite ridiculous, lot.
I can promise you one thing… this is a dinner you don’t want to miss!
(If you would prefer to dine alone as a 4 without the Gilberts, it is more than possible)

Negroni Solera - Double Magnum
On 23rd October 2015 I filled a five litre oak cask with an equal part Gin, Campari, Vermouth Negroni mix.
Over time I have drawn from the barrel but never letting it drop below half full before topping up, so a diminishing part of every blend remains. Over the years each new addition has changed which adds to the complexity… I’ve lightened it up for summer and deepened the intensity for those winter Sunday afternoons.
For the first time ever, and as a complete one off, I will bottle a double magnum (3L) from this nearly 8 year old cask, for the winner of this lot.

The FULL Michael Peng Hunan Experience - Up to 6 people
If there’s a person in the wine trade that doesn’t count this next level Chinese establishment amongst their very favourite restaurants in London, then I haven’t met them.
Michael Peng’s hospitality is as legendary as his cellar. There is always a couple of scraps of paper lying around, away from the main list, with “cheap” Burgundies and more eclectic gems you’ll seldom find elsewhere.
The winner of this lot will experience Michael’s hospitality in full… the one million* course lunch/dinner, including a few of the more esoteric dishes not normally on the menu, all paired with wine from the phenomenal Hunan cellar, that will reflect the gravity of the bid.
I can’t express to you how much I love this restaurant…
(Lunch/dinner weekday or lunch on Saturday)
* it’s not one million. It’s a few less.

No auction of mine would be complete without Chartreuse… and this is my favourite of the whole range, aged yellow from Tarragona, kindly donated by another Chartreuse nut!
I’ve lost count how many times I have recounted the story at 2am about the knight who gave the recipe for the elixir of life to the monks of Chartreuse. Every single piece of history that goes along with this nectar is legendary.
This late 1970's Bottling of Yellow Chartreuse was made in their distillery of Tarragona, in Catalonia, which was open from 1903 to 1989. This is the SUPER rare bottling of Chartreuse… and the best!

The Clare Smyth Experience
Over ten years ago, on a very normal Thursday lunchtime, I ate the best plate of food of my life. Still today, after a thousand more Michelin starred meals, there is nothing that comes close to that plate of food Clare Smyth cooked for me that day, at Restaraunt Gordon Ramsay. Testament to the chef being, quite possibly, the greatest on the planet, it was not a caviar loaded, truffle covered £££££ dish, but a "simple" rabbit dish I chose from her set lunch menu (£50 for 3 courses).
Before and after gaining three Michelin stars at Core, it is almost impossible to get a reservation... but you can, if you try! So she has offered a lot wholly more personal that money REALLY can't buy.
The winner of this lot will receive one of Clare's most cherished knives that has been with her throughout her career at Le Louis XV, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and now Core. If that weren't enough, Clare will also include a signed book, a chefs jacket AND a day in the kitchen at Core.
I'll be honest, if you're a food nut like me, this might just be the best day of your life...

Dinner with Wine and Stay at Michelin Starred Morston Hall in Norfolk - Up to 4 people
Not long after I had first moved to London and "discovered restaurants", I witnessed the meteoric rise to TV fame of Norfolk based chef (and cricket nut), Galton Blackiston. I recall, on a weekend away by the sea, literally driving to Morston Hall just to see the building, long before I could dream of paying the bill.
Holding a Michelin star at this stunning country house hotel for over two decades, when it comes to fine dining, Galton is unquestionably Norfolk's most revered chef.
The winner of this lot will be invited to Morston Hall to experience this legend's creations first hand:
Two rooms for one night (including breakfast)

Not long after I had first moved to London and "discovered restaurants", I witnessed the meteoric rise to TV fame of Norfolk based chef (and cricket nut), Galton Blackiston. I recall, on a weekend away by the sea, literally driving to Morston Hall just to see the building, long before I could dream of paying the bill.
Holding a Michelin star at this stunning country house hotel for over two decades, when it comes to fine dining, Galton is unquestionably Norfolk's most revered chef.
The winner of this lot will be invited to Morston Hall to experience this legend's creations first hand:

When bidding on an auction item, if you enter more than the minimum increment for an item then your bid will be used for proxy bidding. This is how it works:
1. You enter the absolute maximum that you are willing to bid for an item.
2. jumblebee places a bid on your behalf, using the minimum amount required to make you the highest bidder, i.e. current bid price plus bid increment OR the reserve price, if there is one and it can be covered by your proxy bid.
3. jumblebee continues to bid on your behalf, whenever you are outbid by another member's bid, until your maximum bid is exceeded or the auction is won.
4. jumblebee will notify you by email if your maximum bid is outbid by another member and provided the auction is still running, you will then have a chance to enter a new maximum bid if you wish.
For example:
The current bid on an auction item is £100. The minimum increment is £10. You enter a bid of £150 (your maximum bid).
Using your bid, but increasing only by the minimum increment, jumblebee sets the current bid to £110.
Another person bids £130 but they are immediately outbid by jumblebee bidding on your behalf and the current bid goes up to £140.
The auction finishes and you have won the auction item at a price of £140.
